Shop and business signs in Manchester

Expert Shop & Business Signs in Manchester

If you run a shop, a salon, a showroom or an office anywhere in Greater Manchester, your sign is doing a job whether you think about it or not. It tells people you exist, it tells them what you do, and on a busy stretch of road it has about two seconds to do both.

We design, manufacture and fit business signage across Manchester and the surrounding boroughs from our workshop in Warrington, roughly [ADD: journey time] from the city centre. Everything is made in house, so the person who surveys your building is talking to the people who build the sign.

Sign & Branding Services

What we make

Most Manchester jobs fall into one of a few categories.

Illuminated Signage

Fascia signs

Fascia signs are the panel above your shopfront. It is the sign people mean when they say “shop sign”. We make them in aluminium tray, flat panel, built-up lettering and acrylic, illuminated or not.

Window graphics

Window graphics cover everything from opening hours vinyl to full frosted privacy film. Offices in the city centre often need manifestation on glazing for safety reasons anyway, so it makes sense to make it part of the branding rather than a plain strip.

Signage for office interiors, warringron

Interior and reception signage

They cover reception logos, wall graphics, room numbering and directional signs. Anyone fitting out an office in Spinningfields or one of the converted mill buildings usually needs this alongside the exterior work.

vehicle graphics

Vehicle graphics

Vehicle grapgics matter more in Manchester than people expect, because if you are a trade business working across the city your vans spend most of the day parked in front of customers’ houses.

Choosing materials

The material decides how the sign looks on day one and how it looks in year five, and Manchester weather is not gentle on either.

Aluminium tray signs are the standard for a modern shopfront. Powder coated, they hold colour well and they do not swell or warp. Acrylic gives a deeper gloss and works better where the sign is lit from behind. Built-up letters in stainless or brushed aluminium suit professional services and anywhere the building itself is the selling point.

Timber and painted signboards still make sense on older frontages, particularly in conservation areas where councils prefer them, though they need repainting eventually in a way that aluminium does not.

Foamex and correx are fine for temporary use, site boards and short campaigns. They are not a permanent shopfront material, whatever a very cheap quote might imply.

The other thing worth thinking about is how the sign is fixed. On brick, fixings should go into the mortar joints rather than the face of the brick, both because it does less damage and because it is easier to make good when the sign eventually comes down. On rendered or insulated walls the fixing method changes entirely, and that is something a survey picks up and a photograph does not.

How the process works

Initial Concept

Someone comes out and looks at the building. That sounds obvious, but a surprising amount of signage is quoted from a photograph and then does not fit, or does not have anywhere to run power, or turns out to need scaffolding nobody costed for. A survey takes half an hour and it removes most of the ways a signage job goes wrong.

Design

After the survey we produce a visual, so you see the sign on your actual building rather than on a template. Then we manufacture, then we install. Installation in central Manchester sometimes needs a permit, a road closure or a mobile access platform depending on the height and the pavement, and we handle that side of it.

Bespoke Manufacturing

Next, it’s time to make your brand new exterior sign! We work with local suppliers and high quality materials to create a perfectly handcrafted product.

Install

Finally, our fully qualified team will work to safely install your new sign for you. The process is quick and easy!

Planning and consent in Manchester

Not every sign needs permission, but more of them do than most business owners realise. Illuminated signs almost always need advertisement consent, and anything on a listed building or inside a conservation area is treated more strictly.

Manchester has a lot of both. The Northern Quarter, Castlefield, Ancoats and Whitworth Street all contain conservation areas, and Manchester City Council maintains its own guidance on shopfront design in those areas. Trafford, Salford, Stockport and the other boroughs each run their own planning departments with their own conservation areas, so the answer genuinely does change depending on which side of a boundary your unit sits on.

We can advise on what is likely to be acceptable and prepare drawings for an application. We cannot promise an outcome, because that is the council’s decision, but we can stop you paying for a sign that was never going to be approved.

There is a fuller explanation in our guide to whether you need permission for a shop sign in Manchester.

Illuminated signs

Most Manchester shopfronts we quote for end up illuminated in some form. Halo-lit letters, face-lit acrylic and internally lit trays all read very differently at night, and the choice usually comes down to how the building is lit already and what the neighbouring units are doing.

LED has made this much cheaper to run than it used to be. It has also made brightness a planning issue, because councils can and do refuse signs that are too bright for the setting.

Our illuminated signs page covers the different types, and we have written a cost guide if you want to understand what drives the price before you ask for a quote.

Areas we cover across Manchester

We work across Manchester city centre, Salford, Trafford, Stockport, Oldham, Rochdale, Bury, Bolton, Tameside and Wigan, along with the surrounding Cheshire and Warrington area where we are based.

If you are outside that, ask anyway. We travel further for larger installations and rollouts.

If your business is based just outside these towns, get in touch — our installation team covers the wider South Cheshire and Cheshire border area.

How much does a shop sign cost in Manchester?

It depends mostly on size, material and whether it is illuminated. A small non-illuminated flat panel sits at one end of the range and a large built-up illuminated fascia with access equipment sits at the other. We quote after a site survey rather than from a price list, because access and power are often what actually drives the cost.

Some signs are covered by deemed consent and some need express advertisement consent from the council. Illuminated signs, signs above a certain size or height, and signs in conservation areas or on listed buildings usually need an application. Manchester has a large number of conservation areas, so it is worth checking before you order.

Typical turnaround is 2-4 weeks from approved design to installation, depending on sign complexity and current workload.

Yes. Our own team fits everything we make, including work needing access platforms or out of hours installation in the city centre.

Yes. We keep artwork and specifications on file so later units match the first, which matters when a rollout runs over months.
